In summer, there is no shortage of occasions to show off your smile. Whether attending a wedding, graduation celebration, family reunion or neighborhood barbecue, you’ll want to look your best. But if your smile doesn’t shine as brightly as you’d like, a trip to the dental office may just be the confidence-booster you’re looking for. Here are some popular techniques to enhance your smile:
Teeth cleaning. A professional cleaning can make your mouth feel fresh and add sparkle to your smile. The dental hygienist uses special tools to get rid of plaque and tartar that you cannot remove during your oral hygiene routine at home. In addition, hygienists use a tooth-polishing tool that removes surface stains.
Professional whitening. Professional teeth whitening can achieve excellent results in one short office visit. But if you have several weeks before the big event on your calendar, you can also get winning results at home using custom-made whitening trays from the dental office. Either way, your smile can sparkle at summer celebrations.
Cosmetic bonding. If your teeth have small chips or cracks, cosmetic bonding may be a good option for you. In bonding, tooth-colored material is shaped to the tooth and hardened with a curing light. The procedure—generally done in one office visit without anesthesia—is relatively inexpensive, and the result is very natural-looking.
Porcelain veneers. If you are unhappy with the color, shape, size or spacing of your teeth, long-lasting dental veneers can give your smile a whole new look. Veneers are wafer-thin porcelain shells that are bonded to the tooth’s surface. Because they may be crafted in a dental lab, they may require two to three visits to the dental office over a few-week period.
With so many options, it’s easy to put your best smile forward at all your summer gatherings. We can help. If you have any questions about brightening your smile, please contact our office or schedule a consultation. At the first-ever Players Weekend in August 2017, Major League Baseball players wore jerseys with their nicknames on the back. One player — Cleveland Indians shortstop, Francisco Lindor — picked the perfect moniker to express his cheerful, fun-loving nature: “Mr. Smile.” And Lindor gave fans plenty to smile about when he belted a 2-run homer into the stands while wearing his new jersey!
Lindor has explained that he believes smiling is an important part of connecting with fans and teammates alike: “I’ve never been a fan of the guy that makes a great play and then acts like he’s done it 10,000 times — smile, man! We’ve got to enjoy the game.”
We think Lindor is right: Smiling is a great way to generate good will. And it feels great too… as long as you have a smile that’s healthy, and that looks as good as you want it to. But what if you don’t? Here are some things we can do at the dental office to help you enjoy smiling again:
Routine Professional Cleanings & Exams. This is a great place to start on the road toward a healthy, beautiful smile. Even if you are conscientious about brushing and flossing at home, you won’t be able to remove all of the disease-causing dental plaque that can hide beneath the gum line, especially if it has hardened into tartar, but we can do it easily in the office. Then, after a thorough dental exam, we can identify any problems that may be affecting your ability to smile freely, such as tooth decay, gum disease, or cosmetic dental issues.
Cosmetic Dental Treatments. If your oral health is good but your smile is not as bright as you’d like it to be, we can discuss a number of cosmetic dental treatments that can help. These range from conservative procedures such as professional teeth whitening and bonding to more dramatic procedures like porcelain veneers or crowns.
Tooth Replacement. Many people hide their smiles because they are embarrassed by a gap from a missing tooth. That’s a shame, because there are several excellent tooth-replacement options in a variety of price ranges. These include partial and full dentures, bridgework, and dental implants. So don’t let a missing tooth stop you from being Mr. (or Ms.) Smile!

Do you find yourself admiring other people's smiles, but when you look at your own, well, your reaction differs? In fact, you'd love to trade teeth with someone to get the white, flawless smile you've wanted for years. At Dental Perfections, in Kapolei, HI and serving the Ewa Beach area, your cosmetic dentist, Dr. Kern Agader, loves recreating smiles and elevating self-confidence. Why not explore your options for a wonderful new look?
Think about change
Change is the whole point of cosmetic dentistry. Change, enhancement, makeover--whatever way you want to express it, cosmetic dentistry in Kapolei, Makakilo and Ewa Beach can improve:
- The amount of gum tissue which shows when you smile
- Tooth color
- How straight your smile is
- Gaps, crowding, pits, chips, and cracks
- How you feel about yourself
- How those around you perceive your personality
It's true. The American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry has researched how a smile impacts interpersonal relationships. These experts find that a great looking smile tells other people you are more approachable, friendlier, smarter and more competent. In short, your teeth are a highly valuable personal asset.
So when you come to Dental Perfections for a makeover consultation, be prepared to talk to your dentist about specific changes for your smile. And, make sure those changes are realistic ones aimed at making your smile project the real you, not some image of what the world of celebrity says you should be.
Offered cosmetic treatments
Here's a list of some of the services Dr. Agader uses to craft those just-right smiles for patients of all ages. They include:
- Professional teeth whitening, the application of Opalescence at-home whitening. The kit safely bleaches stains created by tobacco, coffee, soy sauce, medications and the aging process. Results last and are absolutely stunning.
- Composite resin bonding, use of a glass and acrylic putty that repairs small flaws such as gaps, cracks and uneven tooth length. Polished and hardened with a curing light, the resin lasts for five to 10 years and looks perfectly seamless.
- Porcelain veneers, translucent shells of fine ceramic which permanently cover the front of chipped, discolored or misshapen teeth. Far less invasive than dental crowns, veneers last for up to twenty years with gentle at home care and in-office cleanings and check-ups.
- Six Month Smiles, tooth-colored braces perfect for older teens and adults who want cosmetic straightening of the teeth right in the front of their mouths. Less expensive and less time consuming than traditional braces or clear aligners, Six Month Smiles are on and off in 4 to nine months.

Porcelain veneers are positive proof that unattractive teeth don't always require an intensive restoration to regain their beauty. These thin layers of translucent porcelain — custom-designed and color-matched to blend with your other teeth — are permanently bonded to the visible side of your front teeth.
Although they can't remedy every tooth defect, they're well suited for mild to moderate disfigurements like chipping, staining or gaps. There are now two types of porcelain veneers: the traditional veneer and the “no-prep” veneer.
The standard veneers require some tooth structure removal, referred to as “tooth preparation.” This is because although they're a millimeter or less in thickness, they can still appear bulky if bonded to an unprepared tooth. To accommodate their width, it's necessary to remove some of the tooth enamel. This permanently alters the tooth so that it will need some form of restoration from that time on.
In recent years, however, other veneer options have emerged that reduces — or even eliminates — this tooth alteration. No-prep veneers are so thin they can be applied to a tooth with virtually no preparation. A more common option, minimal-prep, requires only a minor reshaping with an abrasive tool to ensure the fitted veneer looks as natural as possible. Because of their thinness, these veneers also don't have to fit under the gum line like standard veneers.
To obtain no- or minimal-prep veneers, your tooth enamel needs to be in good, healthy shape. They're also best suited for people with small or worn teeth, narrow smiles (the side teeth can't be seen from the front), or slightly stained or misshapen teeth.
Because there's little invasiveness, these low preparation veneers won't typically create tooth sensitivity and they can often be applied without any form of anesthesia. And because tooth structure isn't removed, they can be “uninstalled” to return to your natural look. Of course, that's not always an easy process since the bonding between veneer and the enamel is quite strong, although today's lasers can be used to detach the veneer quite easily.
If you'd like to consider these minimally invasive veneers, talk with your dentist. If you're a good candidate, you may be able to gain a new smile without much change to your natural teeth.

Chipped, cracked or discolored teeth don't have to ruin your smile. Porcelain veneers offer a simple way to conceal these and other types of dental imperfections. Dr. Kern Agader, your dentist in Kapolei, HI and serving the Makakilo and Ewa Beach, HI areas, explains why you'll want to consider this innovative cosmetic dentistry option.
A smile-changing solution
Could your smile use a little work? When you don't want to undergo extensive dental treatment just to improve small flaws, veneers offer the ideal solution. The thin shells are made of porcelain, a translucent material that resembles tooth enamel. They're cemented on to the front surfaces of your teeth and can last 10 to 20 years before they need to be replaced.
Can veneers improve my smile?
One of the most attractive features of veneers is their versatility. They're equally effective in concealing discolorations as they are lengthening teeth shortened by wear and tear or nightly teeth grinding.
Do you have a tiny chip in a tooth? Chips and cracks are one of the most common reasons people choose veneers. Adding a veneer not only improves your appearance but also prevents bacteria from invading your tooth through the small opening created by the chip or crack.
You would think that all of your teeth would look the same, but sometimes, there's a tooth or two that just looks a little odd. It might be a little crooked or pointed or may have a strange shape. Adding a veneer can transform that problem tooth and dramatically alter your smile.
Gaps in teeth can detract from your appearance, plus they tend to trap pieces of food. Veneers can be designed to cover slight spaces between teeth and offer an easy way to handle the problem.
Veneers are very helpful in concealing discolorations, but they're also a good choice if you're looking for an alternative to teeth whitening treatment in the Kapolei, Makakilo and Ewa Beach area. Teeth often become dull due to the foods and beverages you consume. Although your teeth will be noticeably lighter after whitening, if you continue to eat and drink coffee, tea, wine and berries, the stains will soon return. Since veneers are very resistant to staining, indulging in a morning cup of coffee won't be a problem.
